GNUCash sucks. You have been warned. I cannot tell you how utterly miserable the experience of using this shitty software is.
You cannot merge duplicate transactions. Especially the ones you entered (on one date) with ones that the bank cleared (on another date). Guess what, idiots, I'm interested in both dates.
It does not display the data in a pseudo-single-entry system. Hey dorks, why put everything into a useless acount called "imbalance" when the stupid thing should just create accounts with the names of all transactions, and then let the user pool them later? Because your software is a 230,000 LOC puddle of poo, that's why.
A 'transaction' is different than a 'transfer'.....bzzzzzzt....wrong!!
It's constantly asking you if you want to save things. Guess what: All the data should be fungible, because it is anyway.
It imports OFX data in wierd ways, and loses some of the description data. Buh-bye. Good luck merging the "PAID OUT - 01 JAN 23:57:58 12345" (imported) with "My Power Company" (entered when it happened) because you have to resort the list by amount, and then guess, then manually change all the dups. Resort by amount? Are you guys crazy? Put it this way: Manually entering data, inporting csv, and linking cells between sheets in A SPREADSHEET IS EASIER.
Guess where you put scans of receipts. Answer: It doesn't matter, because you can't link them in.
Forecasting: Forget it. If it can't even reconcile, how will you trust the budget?
There are many many other small nits that will drive you crazy and I'm too annoyed to even list them.
The user interface is probably the worst thing I've ever seen. You will never be a more miserable user of software ever. I hope a meteor crashes into the GNUCash repo and obliterates all the backups.
Reconciliation: Nightmare.
You will never, ever get the same answer as your bank. Ever.
Here's how a personal financial application is supposed to work:
step 1: Take a picture of each receipt with your phone, including stuff you got in the mail.
step 2: Import OFX data periodically from your bank.
step 3: The app shows two numbers at all times: What you'll have when everything clears, and what your bank thinks you have as of the last import.
That's it. No step 4. The app has to figure out all the rest. And everything should be very, very changeable.
